I find the views of the sea, the sky and the coast particularly inspiring, as well as the natural forms of plants, whilst my architectural training means I also find inspiration in the built environment.
Quirky details appear to me – reflections and odd juxtapositions - I like to see the smaller as well as the bigger picture! I work in a variety of media, but currently I am mainly working in acrylics. I also enjoy working in pen & ink, coloured pencil and sometimes mixed media/collage.
I was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Aberdeen, where I studied architecture at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture. After a spell in Edinburgh we moved to North Berwick, which is a small coastal town on the Firth of Forth about twenty miles east of Edinburgh, thirty years ago. I have always drawn and painted, fitting it around my employment and other interests, which are mainly gardening related. I was involved with the local in Bloom group for nearly twenty years, for the last seven as Chair, and received an RHS Britain in Bloom Community Champion Award in 2013. In 2019 I was awarded a Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Certificate of Merit in recognition of my "highly regarded and significant contribution to horticulture and gardening in Scotland". I love food, wine, cooking and reading - and I take a lot of photographs. I have been President of the North Berwick Art Group for ten years, and I am also a member of the Society of Scottish Artists and Visual Arts Scotland.
During the summer from April until September most afternoons I can be found in my colourful beach hut studio/gallery at North Berwick harbour, alongside a lovely community of other artists and makers.
