or, working to a deadline. Not something I experience too often these days, other than when I have a commission, but having said I would produce a pen & ink drawing of the Kirk that is what I am now doing!
The Exhibition at St Mary's Parish Church in Haddington takes place from Friday 12th May through until Sunday 14th. I was delighted to be invited to exhibit at this show along with some very well known names. It will feature glass, ceramics, jewellery and prints as well as paintings and is a good chance to see the beautiful church itself. it was looking particularly fine yesterday when I went to take a few photos with lots of blossom on show. Proceeds from the sale of works will go to the St Mary's lighting project.

This very popular event (there are queues at 10am on Good Friday before opening!) is running again this year, raising funds not only towards the refurbishment of the church kitchen but also for Leuchie House respite home. I am pleased to be exhibiting here again along with many other talented local artists. Open all Easter weekend with hours as shown below.
Head down this week working for the forthcoming St Andrew Blackadder Easter art show. This one is nearly finished with a bit of work on the prow and refelctions still to do. Slightly larger than my usual at 400mm square. These four buoys have featured in other paintings I have done - I find them strangely attractive :)
Pet Portraits? No - Pot Portraits! This one is entitled 'Pot Luck' and will be featured in one of the shows I have coming up, either at the St Andrew Blackadder Easter Art Show, or the St Mary's Kirk art show in May.
Having recently drawn quite a few little houses in various traditional Scottish styles as single small pictures, I thought it might be rather fun to make a long thin street. It bears no relation to any real place - but looks like quite a nice place to live (no cars, for a start!)
Having been busy with a commission recently - which was unusual as it was a pen and ink drawing of an unbuilt project - there hasn't been much time for anything else. However I have just finished another work featuring my favourite birch trees, this time in summer hues. Only winter left to go now!
I seem to be unable to sit and work away at one thing diligently at the moment but have several projects on the go at once. These trunks will become springtime birch trees; I have been wandering around looking at chimney pots (this can be a little hazardous if not paying enough attention to what feet are doing!) and I have treated myself to a big box of pencils which I have hankered after for a while. Also waiting for some lino cutting tools to arrive - I have no idea where my old ones are - as I want to do some printing again. New year - new possibilities!
A drawing/mixed media piece that I seem to have been working on nearly all week. Sometimes I wondered if it might not have actually been quicker to have constructed it out of masonry. I do like working in coloured pencil - Derwent Coloursoft are great to use as they are soft and blend well and can give a good intensity of colour - but it does seem to be quite time consuming. What amuses me about this image is the contrast between the name of the street - 'Quality' and the state of the street sign and fern-encrusted rhone. The colours in the stone, brought out by the stugging and stains, are so varied.
What I love about this time of year is that the harbour has fewer vessels in it - many are lifted out for the winter. This means there is a greater expanse of water and on a clear sunny day there are lots of wonderful reflections. What I don't love is the fact it gets dark too early, and despite "daylight" bulbs I find it very hard to work into the evening! The results of an evening's endeavour are oft viewed with dismay the following morning - when the colours reveal their true selves in the cold light of day...
Busy working away for next weeks NB Art Group Show. I hope to have this one finished tomorrow. ...and I cannot lie. Perhaps it is my architectural training but I do look up at roofs quite a lot, and I am always struck by the variety in colour, size and shape of chimney pots. These ones are based partly on my neighbour's chimney, and partly made up. Colouring pencil, and they will have an acrylic background of sky. And a seagull!
